Workshop 2005 Green Matters! - Exploring green spaces in your school

A big portion of each day, for students and teachers alike, is spend in and around the school. The schoolground is an important area where students socialize, play and let off steam. Carbon Busters believes that naturalized schoolgrounds are a very important part of any school. A natural schoolyard creates habitat for wildlife, fosters a sense of environmental awareness, enriches the play and it has been proven to reduce anti-social and aggressive behaviors among students. A naturalized schoolyard is a invaluable teaching resource and the curriculum provides plenty of opportunities to take the classroom outside.

Our workshops in 2005 evolved around how schoolyards can be naturalized. We tried to instill excitement in schools to "green" their school yard, gave tips and ideas and engaged in some fun outdoor activities. With over 220 participants in over 9 workshops we believe we did just that.

Workshops were held in the following schools:

Battle River district
May 11, 2005: Bashaw School, Bashaw - grade 6,7,8
May 12, 2005: Chester Ronning School, Camrose - grade 5
May 12, 2005: Holden School, Holden - grade 5, Eco-Club


Horizon district
May 19, 2005: Warner School, Warner - grade 3-6
May 19, 2005: Enchant School, Enchant - grade 5, 6
May 20, 2005: Erle Rivers High School - grade 7

St. Thomas Acquinas District
May 26, 2005: Sacred Heart School, Wetaskiwin - grade 4
